“WhatsApp Tops Social Media Misused by Cybercriminals: MHA 2024”
WhatsApp is one of the top social media platforms that cybercriminals misuse: MHA 2024 reveals the report. It exposes, that 43,797 complaints related to cyber fraud through WhatsApp were received in 2024.
One of the most favorite platforms of Cybercrime is social media WhatsApp which is followed by Telegram and Instagram. Most cyber scamers use these two platforms for their cyber frauds. According to the latest report of the Union Home Ministry, these two social media apps are the special hunting ground for online scammers.
“Complaint data of social media misused by cybercriminals
Here is the data on complaints for the first 3 months of 2024:
- 43,797 complaints considered cyber fraud through WhatsApp.
- 22,680 complaints were received through Telegram.
- 19,800 complaints are recorded through Instagram.
Annual report 2023-2024 reveals that cyber criminals used the Google service platform to initiate scams. The advertising platform of Google provides a handy resource for searching advertisements across the World. This scam is called a Pig Butchering Scam and is also known as an Investment Scam.
It is a universal theory that encircles a huge scale of money laundering and also cyber slaves. Unemployed people, needy people, students, and housewives are hunted in it, and people are wasting a large amount of money and bringing loans into their daily routines.
Google, Facebook, and the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) do cooperative work to share sensitive information and specious signals to stop cyber crimes. This mutual activity includes pointing out dangerous apps, identifying suspicious activities on free hosting platforms like Firebase and tracking Smartphone malware among other viruses. This cooperate work goal is to take instant steps against online scammers.
