Hackers Target WhatsApp Accounts Of Ministers

A group of hackers from Russia are trying to hack the WhatsApp accounts of ministers and official websites all over the world. Hackers send the email to the official or the government’s website and request to join the WhatsApp link or group, if some hit on that link, they steal the information through this link. So, be cautious before clicking any link.

A hacking group by the name of Star Blizzard used a new technique to hack the minister’s WhatsApp account. This hacker group is related to the Russian spy agency through Britain’s NCSC ( National Cyber Security Center).

The National Cyber Security Center claims that Star Blizzard’s basic aim is to establish distrust in the political situation of the UK and many other similar countries. Hackers target WhatsApp accounts of ministers its means this group wants to weaken the government and create clashes between the people and governments. Their activities have a great effect on creating unhappiness and conditions of mistrust in the country. 

According to the report, the hackers sent an email to the victim and claimed from the official government of the UK. This email is used to trace the victim and the hacker requests to click on a QR code and join the WhatsApp group.

This QR code links the user to another device where the hackers steal their WhatsApp data. They take full control of their WhatsApp and users have no information about it.  Microsoft said that this process can give access to users’ WhatsApp data but Microsoft doesn’t describe whether the data is stolen.

In this hacking campaign, a false invitation to join the WhatsApp group was sent to people such as a non-governmental invitation to help the Ukerian. Not only hackers target WhatsApp accounts of ministers, but also targets other people who are connected to Russia in international matters or helping in the war of Ukraine against Russia.

In 2023, the National Cyber Security Center said that Star Blizzard targets universities and journalists and tries to enter the politics of the UK. The National Cyber Security Center said that Star Blizzard is working with more facilities under FSB center unit 18. During this announcement in 2023, the UK imposed the sanction on the two members, one of them being the officer of FSB. 

Microsoft revealed that the WhatsApp campaign was stopped in November, but a change in Star Bilzzard’s strategy shows how this unit works with motivation and consideration.

The technique of spear phishing is used to send malicious emails to individuals and to access sensitive information. Cybercriminals usually use the QR code in criminal activities. This practice is called quishing in the field of cybercrimes.

Microsoft mentions that the people who can be victims of Star Blizzard should remain alert for an email, particularly if the email contains some external links. If there is doubt about some email, first contact the person that you think this person sent it through his known or previously used email and check whether this email is original.

WhatsApp is the product of meta and end-to-end encryption applications. Only the sender and recipient can view the message unless access to the user’s WhatsApp through unfair practice.

A spoke man who officially defends the WhatsApp service mentions that to connect the WhatsApp account with some companion devices always use the WhatsApp official services instead of third-party. Don’t click any link forwarded from an unknown email or number. Just click on the link, you receive from your known people or group in which you have stronge trust.
